The Millard Fuller Foundation has reiterated its commitment to the provision of truly affordable homes to low income earners in Nigeria.

Speaking at a virtual event organised by the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing to commemorate the World Habitat Day which held on Monday, 5th October, 2020, the Chief Executive Officer of the organisation, Sam Odia said that every human being deserves to have access to simple, decent, and affordable housing.

Odia who stated that Fuller created over 11,600 temporary jobs during its recently concluded 600-unit GrandLuvu housing project noted that young people are also being trained in construction skills development and the use of power tools as a means of making them self-reliant, while providing starter homes for less than 2million Naira per unit as 78% of the population in Nigeria earns less than N40,000.00 a month.

“Despite the high demand for our houses, we are contending with offtake financing which has proven to be a major challenge as far as homeownership in Nigeria is concerned. This has prompted us to design bridging facilities for those who are ready to move into our homes while they wait for the FMBN loan to come through,” Odia said.

With regards to building sustainable estates, Odia said that Fuller is focused on developing green buildings and this has led to the planning of an off-grid project which should kick-start in the coming year.

While urging the government to support ideas that are being implemented on a small scale in the bid to scale them up as against reinventing the wheel, Odia concluded that Fuller is currently carrying out a research to ensure that more persons are able to afford a decent home.

The event which held with the theme, "Housing for All: A Better Urban Future" aimed at providing an opportunity to engage stakeholders in discussions on the transformative impact of COVID-19 on the housing and human settlement sector, and to explore the possibilities of building sustainable societies.

The event had major stakeholders in the housing industry in attendance, notable speakers at the event which was moderated by Mark Eddo Founder, Mark Eddo Media Ltd International Communications and Business Consultant include, Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN), Hon. Fuller: Creating a Haven for Children

With a vision of seeing a world where everyone has access to simple, decent and affordable homes, the Millard Fuller Foundation has designed its estates such that attention is paid to our children’s upbringing.

A home environment where a child spends his or her early years has long-term effects on their physical, mental and emotional development; therefore, a safe, responsive and nurturing environment plays a vital part in supporting their learning and development.

The rising housing deficit in Nigeria has compelled low-income earners to live in unplanned settlements, which have adverse negative effects on children’s formative years. The hazards associated with living in slums and unplanned settlements for these persons are endless as the children are exposed to unsafe place for games and recreations, lack of potable drinking water, indiscriminate waste disposal and even outright physical, mental and emotional abuse.

The Millard Fuller Foundation is changing this narrative as low-income earners who are residents of the GrandLuvu Estate, developed by Fuller Housing can now raise their children in a befitting environment.

                                                                              Fuller children3b

According to Mrs. Josephine, a civil servant, who moved into the estate in 2018, seeing her children play freely without fear of being molested or abused is what gives her so much joy. “I used to live in a rented apartment in Lagos and I supervised my children when they needed to play outside. This, for me, was stressful as I had to put other activities on hold to do so. I was not comfortable in the environment where I lived, but after being transferred to this part of the country and moving into my own home in the GrandLuvu Estate, my children can now play with other children in the children playground, unsupervised by me, but under the watchful eyes of the estate’s trained security guards.

For Mrs. Damaris Dogara, moving into the GrandLuvu Estate is one of the best decisions she has ever made. “As you can see, the estate is well-planned, neat and appropriate for raising a growing child. What makes me happy always is the fact that my daughter has enough room to play around with other children.”

The Millard Fuller Foundation seeks to ensure that low-income earners have access to simple, decent and affordable housing. In partnership with Family Homes Funds, the organization has delivered over 700 homes to Nigerians thereby creating a healthy community where children can feel safe and secure.

For the 3rd consecutive year, the Millard Fuller Foundation has won the award for “The Affordable Housing Project of the Year 2018” at the just concluded Nigeria Housing Award.

The award and dinner event which was part of activities to round off the 12th Abuja International Housing Show held at the International Conference Centre on Thursday, 19th of July 2018 and had in attendance professionals in the housing sector.

In his acceptance speech, the CEO of the Millard Fuller Foundation, Sam Odia, thanked the organisers of the Nigeria Housing Award for the honour. In his words: “This award is an honour done to our organisation because it is the third time we have won. This goes to show that our efforts at providing truly affordable homes for low-income earners are not going unnoticed. We are passionate about what we are doing, and this, we will continue to do. We are truly grateful.”

The awardees, among many others, include Rev. Ugochukwu Chime - Housing Advocacy Person of the Year (National), Dr. Kunle Faleti - Housing Advocacy Person of the Year (Diaspora) and Ahmed Dangiwa, Managing Director of Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria - Housing Finance Person of the Year.

It will be recalled that the Millard Fuller Foundation won the award for the Affordable Housing Project Of The Year 2016 and 2017. A faith-driven organization that promotes collaborative and innovative partnerships with individuals and organizations in an unrelenting quest to provide, on a sustainable basis, affordable housing for all people in need, The Millard Fuller Foundation from its head office in Luvu-Madaki, a community in Masaka, Nasarawa State has touched the lives of hundreds of Nigerians by providing them with basic and affordable homes to live in.

Recently, The Millard Fuller Foundation partnered with the Family Homes Funds to deliver affordable homes to low-income earners in Nigeria. With over 600 fully completed housing units comprising of 1 and 2-bedroom semi-detached bungalows selling for as low as N2.9M, The Millard Fuller Foundation has commenced the construction of an additional 600 units of similar units which will be completed within the next few months.

The Nigeria Housing Award, organised by FESADEB Communication Limited, is an annual event which celebrates the successes of firms, individuals, teams and companies who are setting trends in innovative construction, consistent in high industry standards, enabling market expansion and engaged in the development of the national economy. The award endorses abilities and rewards achievements and is widely regarded as the most credible and prestigious award in Nigeria’s housing industry.

The Millard Fuller Foundation is set to exhibit its products at the 12th Abuja International Housing Show scheduled to take place at the International Conference Centre, Abuja, from Monday, 16th to Thursday, 19th July 2018.

As an annual event which brings together housing sector professionals and stakeholders, the Abuja International Housing Show provides an avenue for organizations and individuals to sell their products and brands to potential clients and investors.

The convener of the Abuja International Housing Show, Festus Adebayo in an interview, has promised that this year’s edition will witness new innovations that have been added to the largest housing show on the continent.

Some of the unique innovations, according to Adebayo, include the introduction of the CEO’s forum, women in the housing sector initiative, international real estate investment forum and the youth in real estate development forum.

According to him, “The CEO’s forum is unique in the sense that leaders in real estate, banking, building materials and technology will be meeting together to address the issue of affordable housing finance holistically”.

He further stated, “We will be launching the women in housing sector initiative. The show will also feature youth in real estate development. As you know, there are a lot of youths who are excelling in real estate and there are some who have not discovered the opportunities in the sector; the idea is to catch them young and teach them by educating them on housing mortgage, among others.”

With the Theme: “Driving Growth & Sustainability In Nigeria Housing & Mortgage Markets - Improving Structures & Policies For Impact”, this year’s event, according to the convener, will feature 30 Speakers and 350 exhibitors from not less than 10 countries.
